Our Projects
Mountain of the Rogue Trail Construction (Multiple Projects)
Location: Rogue River, OR/ Medford District BLM
Participating Stakeholders: Bureau of Land Management Medford Office, Rogue Valley Mountain Bike Association, Oregon Department of Parks and Recreation
Our team constructed over 2.5 miles of new trail and enhanced and rebuilt 4.25 miles of existing trail at the BLM’s mountain of the Rogue. The project team worked to create trail additions that added more flavor and options to the Mountain of the Rogue Experience. These included constructing numerous novice and intermediate loop options that created training routes for the local NICA team and youth athletic programs. Most exciting our team constructed a 1/2 mile hand built trail on the backside of the mountain, and a 3/4 mile, hand built double-black expert trail. The expert trail traverses steep sideslopes and connects multiple basalt rock slabs, creating a wild and challenging experience for riders.
Hundred Acre Wood Trails
Location: City of Coquille, OR
Participating Stakeholders: City of Coquille, Oregon Coast Visitors Association, Bandon Dunes Charitable Foundation, Judith Ann Morgan Foundation, Coos County, Coquille Tribal Council, First Community Credit Union
In 2021, Ptarmigan Ptrails was hired by City of Coquille to design Phase I of the Hundred Acre Wood. The terrain was located within 1/4 mile of the Historic downtown. Connecting the community neighborhoods and businesses to the trail system was a major goal of the project. In 2023, PTRAILS bid on the construction of Hundred Acre and was awarded the build contract. Our team built 3 miles of mountain bike optimized trails and an additional 3 of shared use and hike only trails. A portion of the trails were designed and constructed to meet adaptive bike and universal access standards. We continue to build on our experience from previous projects to improve our deliverables and create new standards of excellence across Oregon.
Chehalem Ridge Nature Park
Location: Gaston, OR
Participating Stakeholders: Portland METRO
Ptarmigan Ptrails constructed over 7.5 of new trail in this multi-use system and worked with METRO to adjust and realign 1/3 of the natural surface and AAA trails (All Ages and Abilities). CRNP now provides a unique and beautiful trail experience, with interpretive, aerobic and NICA training and wilderness experiences for residents on the west side of the METRO area. The majority of the trail system was designated for hiking and biking, while a separate area also included design and management standards for equine users. Due to the complexity of the permitting, compliance and construction process, PTRAILS also provided ongoing design services to METRO in order to finalize route alignments and provide problem solving real world trail concerns. During the construction process, our team worked with METRO agency and contractor peers to alleviate concerns in design, trail connectivity and potential trail impact issues that arose when bring the trail design to life. We were honored to be a part of this significant project that helps bring new recreational trails to an underserved area of the Portland metro community.
Whiskey Run Mountain Bike Trails - Phases I, II, & II
Location: Coos County Forest, Oregon Coast
Participating Stakeholders: Bandon Dunes Charitable Foundation, Coos County, Wild Rivers Coast Mountain Biking Association, Oregon Parks and Recreation, Oregon Coast Visitors Association, Travel Southern Oregon Coast, Travel Oregon
Our firm worked to build and design all three phases of the 32 mile trail system composed of beginner, intermediate and expert trails. The trails traverse steep coastal drainages and flat marine terraces, offering a challenging build process due to coastal weather and soil dynamics. Unique to the Oregon Coast, Whiskey Run is the first year round, sustainable trail system on Oregon’s Pacific Coast. Phase I was constructed to appeal to families, beginner and intermediate riders. Phase II and II were designed and constructed to draw in more advanced riders with steeper grades, challenging drops, and more exposed trails.
Ravine Trail at Crystal Bridges
Location: Bentonville, Arkansas
Participating Stakeholders: Bella Vista Trail Blazers, Walton Family Foundation
Our clients were looking for an adaptive trail to connect the Crystal Bridges Museum to the Scott Family Amazeum via a native surface path that provided an easy mountain bike or hike experience that was separate from their paved pathways. We were able to provide a seamless and aesthetically pleasing trail transition from pavement to natural surface with an enjoyable grade that can hold up to Arkansas’ challenging weather.
Thurston Hills Natural Area
Location: Springfield, OR
Participating Stakeholders: Willamalane Parks and Recreation District
Our firm was hired to help the WPRD develop the first phase at Thurston Hills Natural Area, a suburban multi-use wilderness park in the Eugene/Springfield area. We worked with WPRD staff to fine tune all trail alignments throughout the project site and moved on to construction of Mossy Maple, portions of Yew Haw Trail, and a full design build of Acer Spades, a beginner-intermediate downhill flow trail. Thurston’s challenges represent a learning opportunity that we can apply across the board to many projects throughout Northern California and Southern Oregon region.
We take pride in our work from start to finish. From large scale multi-use trail designs to small bike parks. Here is a showcase of just a few of our projects over the years and across the nation. With 15 years of experience in the field of trail construction & design, we just simply can’t list all our projects on one page.
